When Marcel van Zijp was asked to make the design for the “Vissersnamen” (“Fishers’ Names”) Monument in Scheveningen, his goal was to create a beautiful and subtle design and certainly not a stone “phone book”.
His design became a monument consisting of 18 granite slabs with a total length of 25 meters with the large, etched text:
“Not returned from sea, name for name engraved in stone”.
This text is visible from some distance. If one comes closer, one discovers the names of 1.366 fishermen who have lost their lives at sea during the past two centuries.
The Monument was unveiled on May 24, 2013 by H.R.H. Princess Beatrix of The Netherlands who was very taken with the design.n
